Acrylic Box

Acrylic boxes are perfect if you have an object that needs to be viewed properly from more than one angle.

By using clear cast acrylic joined with clean mitered edges, the clear case is a contemporary and minimal solution which allows the object to really speak for itself.

Taking this one step further, we also design bespoke display solutions in acrylic which are specifically engineered around an object or artwork.

With the ceramic plate to the right, for example, we built a box with grooves internally so the plate slides exactly in between and stands upright by itself. This box then hangs on the wall.

Classic acrylic box

1. Acrylic lid

The acrylic lid is made from clear cast perspex which has excellent light transmission and clarity.

Boxes are fabricated with precise edges giving, clean and bubble free joins.

2. Mounted Artwork

Artwork in acrylic boxes is typically three dimensional, and quite deep, however flat artworks can also be framed this way to great effect.

Flat artwork would be floated or distance floated from the back panel.

3. Back panel

Made from either a wooden panel or foamex sheet, the back panel is sprayed or lined with conservation paper. It can also be made from acrylic. This provides a rigid back to the box and a solid surface to mount the artwork on to.

4. Hanging System

The back panel is fitted with a split baton and wall plate so it can be hung directly on to the wall. The split baton is narrower than the box so it is not visible when hanging, with the box appearing to float away from the wall. It can also be layed flat on the floor as a plinth or coffee table.

Bespoke designs

Unique objects

When an artwork is unique it will often require a bit more thought to find the right solution for displaying it.

This glazed cermaic tile had been painted on both sides, so we were asked to design a display case to show off the two faces.

3D Visualisation

As the tile could not be physically attached in any way we designed a self supporting upright stand with a sliding lid. Channels were cut into the acrylic which the ceramic tile slid into, holding it in position. These were carefully designed with 3D modelling software to allow space for the curvature in the ceramic tile, while not leaving so much space that it would move around and potentially break.

The resulting cases have thick chamfered bases to hold them steady, and the sharp lines and contemporary sheen of the acrylic case sets off the organic qualities of the ceramic tile.
